Protecting the DEVOS System from Security and Other Third-Party Solutions

Many DEVOS customers opt to install their own internet and/or anti-virus software on their servers to protect them from unwanted attacks or hacking. For most installations, this will present no problems to the normal operations of the DEVOS system. There are times, however, when it will be necessary to take measures to protect certain folders and files on the DEVOS server from scans or other server management operations that could potentially change or disable critical files or functionality in the DEVOS system. This article will explain what folders and files should not be tampered with and may require being exempted from being monitored or scanned by such applications.

Critical Folders

The following folders and all subfolders and files within them are specific to the DEVOS system operations and should not be changed or tampered with in any way without direct assistance from Discover Video support technicians:
c:\devosapps
c:\evos
c:\inetpub
If you find that any of these folders are missing or have been changed in any way, you will need to contact Discover Video's support staff for assistance. You can do so by emailing the support staff at support@discovervideo.com

DEVOS Running Tasks

In addition to the files and folders described herein, there are also a number of processes which run constantly on every DEVOS and DV Express server that should always remain running. If they are stopped or prevented from running, the DEVOS system will not function properly and may result in specific system functions not being available for users. These processes as shown as running in the DEVOS or DV Express server Task Manager include the following:
Devos System Information (32 bit)
DEVOS Task Manager (32 bit)
devos_realtime_functions (32 bit)
DvStreamRecorderService (32 bit)
EvoStream Media Server (EMS)
SchedulerConsole
If any of these processes are found not to be running on a DEVOS or DV Express server, please contact Discover Video's support staff for assistance at support@discovervideo.com

Running Services

There are also a number of services that need to be able to run on every DEVOS or DV Express server. These services must never be set to disabled or stopped for any reason. In addition, some of the services cannot be started manually and must be started through DEVOS system operations. These services include the following:
DV Realtime Functions Service
DV Stream Recording Service
EvoStreamMediaServer
If any of these services are unable to be run by the normal DEVOS system operations, please contact Discover Video's support staff for assistance at support@discovervideo.com

Scheduled Tasks

Many of the DEVOS operations including the processes and services described herein are run by scheduled tasks that are scheduled to run on all DEVOS and DV Express servers. In most installations, it is best practice to run these scheduled tasks with the Windows administrator account or a user account that is in the local system administrators group. These scheduled tasks and the commands they execute must be allowed to run without anything blocking or impeding their operation. These scheduled tasks are listed as follows:
Devos_special_script
Devos_Task_Manager
Restart Service DV Visitors
If any of these scheduled tasks are not running or fail to run for any reason, or if there are any errors shown in the Last Run Result in the server's Task Scheduler, please contact Discover Video's support staff for assistance at support@discovervideo.com
NOTE FOR SERVERS ON DOMAINS
Any server that has been added to a domain may require a domain account to be added to the server's local administrators group to be used to run the scheduled tasks listed herein. It is important that servers on a domain have accounts that have the proper domain policy permissions to run these tasks and to perform other actions such as running PowerShell scripts on the server.

PowerShell Scripts

Some of the processes and tasks outlined herein use Microsoft PowerShell scripts in their operations. These scripts all reside in the c:\devosapps folder or subfolders and must be allowed to run for DEVOS or DV Express to operate properly.
